Nate B. Jones on AI Skills & Careers

AI skills are the abilities that make a person effective with AI, from specifying a task to judging the output. As of October 2026, Nate B. Jones says AI is making five skills worth more: taste, agency, focus, resourcefulness and follow-through. He tells leaders to watch how people handle unfamiliar problems and to weigh the skills listed on a resume less.

Questions

What are basic AI skills?

Nate says the skills that keep people using AI past the basics, which he calls 201 skills, aren't prompting techniques. In January 2026 he named six: context assembly, quality judgment, task decomposition, iterative refinement, workflow integration and frontier recognition. In October 2026 he added five skills AI makes more valuable: taste, agency, focus, resourcefulness and follow-through.

How do I start learning AI?

Nate's advice, as of October 2026, is to learn close to the moment you need the knowledge. Pick a worthwhile project that is hard for you, bring each confusing error to the AI, and ask it to explain what's happening or whether there's a simpler approach. Each finished project helps make the next one possible.
